Beyond Bama Spring 2026 Trip

We’re excited to offer our students a unique and impactful trip this March, combining hands-on service with the unforgettable culture of New Orleans. From meaningful environmental projects to exploring the city’s rich history and lively spirit, this experience is designed to help students connect, serve, and discover in a truly memorable way.

Environmental Restoration and Cultural Learning in New Orleans

Join us in New Orleans as we serve the community through hands-on environmental projects, including oyster shell restoration and Mardi Gras bead recycling. Along the way, we will explore the city’s rich history and vibrant culture, with time to enjoy a ghost tour, swamp tour, a New Orleans Pelicans game, and other exciting ways to experience the city’s unique spirit.

We are proud to partner with the Coalition of Restore Coastal Louisiana, and look forward to recycling oyster shells to be constructed into reefs that will serve as habitats for oysters and other aquatic species! You can more about this activity by watching this video.

We will also work alongside The Green Project to help promote a culture of creative reuse by diverting usable materials from landfills and cultivating a respect for their value. Students will help in the paint yard, sorting and recycling paint. You can learn more about this organization by watching this video.

Cost and Travel Grants

The all-inclusive cost to participate is $680 and includes ground transportation, supplies, lodging, all meals and snacks, tickets to cultural attractions and a UA Volunteer t-shirt. Upon acceptance to this trip, a non-refundable deposit of $50 will be due by January 30. We do not want cost to be a barrier so keep in mind that there are payment plans and travel grants available. If awarded a grant, you will be notified via email of the total amount awarded within 1 to 2 business days of completing the form.  If the grant does not cover the entirety of the trip, the remaining amount due must be paid no later than Friday, February 20, 2026.

Lodging and Food

We will stay at Camp Hope, a converted school building that now houses hundreds of volunteers that come to serve in the greater New Orleans area each year. Breakfast, sack lunch, and dinner will be provided by Camp Hope during the week. Accommodations are air-conditioned, separate male and female bunk rooms.

We will eat out at local restaurants on Saturday and Sunday to experience New Orleans Creole and Cajun food that is rich in flavor and history! From gumbo and jambalaya to beignets and king cake, the food of New Orleans is truly unlike anyother!

Cultural Excursions

Students will embark on a tour of the renowned Honey Island Swamp with Cajun Encounters. Gliding through gator territory aboard a small, flat-bottomed boat, local expert captains share fascinating insights about the swamp and its natural inhabitants. Tours are led by top experts the field, many of whom have spent their lives on the water and hold specialized degrees, ensuring an authentic and unforgettable experience of one of America’s most unique ecosystems.

Bring

Linens for a twin bunk bed will be provided (fitted sheet, flat sheet, and blanket). Students should bring a pillow and extra blanket, shower towel, work clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on, play clothes, toiletries, water bottle, and spending money for souvenirs.
